River Strike is a vertical shooter where your jet races forward without stopping along a long, curving river. You can play River Strike unblocked in your browser: red boats cross the water, dark green blocks poke out from the shore, and yellow fuel depots float in your path. Steering and shooting are only half the job, because your fuel gauge drains the whole time. Frank Force made it for his LittleJS Arcade collection.
How to Play River Strike
Press Play on the title screen and the jet starts moving right away. It always flies forward. Use the left and right arrows or A and D to stay over the water, since brushing the shoreline ends the run with a “Crashed” message.
Push up or W to fly faster and down or S to slow down. Let go and the jet eases back to normal cruising speed. Hold Space to keep firing. The gun shoots about seven bullets a second, and every target falls to a single hit.
Your score sits at the top of the screen with the fuel gauge just below it, drawn as a row of bars that empties from right to left.
Points, Targets and Fuel
The river is built in short stretches, and each one has a good chance of holding a boat or a bank obstacle and a smaller chance of holding a fuel depot. Here is what each object does:
- Boats are worth 50 points. They slide sideways and bounce off the shore, so they can drift into your lane.
- Bank obstacles are worth 25 points. They stick out from one side of the river and never move, which narrows the water.
- Fuel depots are worth 100 points either way. Fly through one to also add 45 percent of a full tank. Shoot it and you only get the points.
Touching a boat or obstacle is a crash, just like hitting the bank. Fuel depots are the only thing you want to touch.
How the Fuel Gauge Really Works
You start every run with a full tank. Fuel drains a little every frame, plus extra based on your speed. At cruising speed a full tank lasts a little over half a minute, and when it hits empty the game ends with “Out of fuel.”
Here is the surprise in the code: depots are placed by distance, not by time. Flying at full throttle burns fuel a bit faster per second, but it covers far more river on each tank. That means you pass more depots before you run dry. Slowing down only makes sense in tight bends, where you need time to steer.
River Strike Tips
- Hold Space on straight sections. Constant fire wipes out boats before they slide into your lane.
- Speed up on open water. Since distance brings depots, the throttle is your friend whenever the river is wide.
- Slow down through tight bends. Less speed gives you time to line up with the skinny sections next to bank obstacles.
- Route through depots when below half. Steer into the next yellow strip and save your bullets for something else.
- Aim where boats will be. They move sideways, so lead your shots a little.
- Clear the path, not everything. Points are nice, but a boat near the far shore is not worth swerving for.
Mistakes New Players Make
The most common mistake is shooting every depot out of habit, then running out of fuel a few seconds later. Another is swinging wide after dodging a boat and clipping the bank on the other side. Small steering taps keep you safer than long holds. Finally, many players fly slowly to “save fuel,” which actually means fewer depots and more empty stretches.
Restarting, Pausing and Devices
When you crash or run dry, the action freezes on the message. Tap Enter, or use the fire button with a gamepad or touchscreen, to launch a fresh river right away. Esc or the menu icon in the upper-right corner pauses the game.
It plays well on a keyboard, a gamepad or a touchscreen. On a phone or tablet, touch the screen once and the on-screen thumbstick and buttons appear. There are sound effects for shots, explosions and refueling, so mute your device in class if needed.
