All 8 sports games to play now

Plenty of sports games on the web try to cram a whole season onto your screen. These do the opposite. Each one picks a single moment, like a putt, a free throw or a spot kick, and lets you repeat it until you are good at it. That makes them easy to fit into a short break and easy to come back to.

Sports Games Grouped by How You Shoot

Drag and release. Mini Golf, Free Throw and Gravity Golf all work the same way: press, pull to aim and set power, then let go. A longer pull means a harder shot. Billiards is close: point where the cue ball should go, and the farther the pointer sits from the ball, the more power. The scroll wheel fine-tunes it.

Pure timing. Archery Challenge and Home Run Hitter are one-button games. In archery the bow rises and falls on its own, and you pick the instant to release. In baseball you press Space to swing as the pitch arrives.

A mouse flick. Bowling Alley is unlike everything else here. You hold Space and use the mouse like your arm: pull toward you to charge, then push away to throw.

Pick a zone. Penalty Shootout splits the goal into nine zones. Click one to aim, then lock the power bar. In goal, you pick a zone to dive toward.

Short Rounds and Longer Sessions

Free Throw always lasts sixty seconds, and Archery Challenge is ten arrows. Those are perfect for the end of class.

A Penalty Shootout match is five kicks a side. Bowling Alley is a full ten-frame game, so give it more time. Mini Golf has nine holes, but the course map lets you start on any of them, so you can play just one. Gravity Golf and Home Run Hitter never end. Gravity Golf builds random holes and adds a planet each time, while Home Run Hitter is endless batting practice.

What Each Game Does Best

  • Mini Golf has nine hand-made holes, from stone bumpers to a sliding gate. The ball uses real physics, so bank shots work.
  • Billiards is solo pool. Sink all 15 balls in as few strokes as you can. Every shot counts, even a miss.
  • Gravity Golf happens in space. Each planet pulls on the ball, and a dotted line previews the whole flight.
  • Free Throw has a hoop that glides back and forth, and its guide dots stop well short of the rim, so the finish is up to you.
  • Home Run Hitter looks down from above the park. About two in three pitches come through the yellow box over the plate.
  • Penalty Shootout is pixel soccer with a cheering crowd and chiptune music. Pick national teams or made-up clubs, and face the computer or a friend.

Phone or Laptop?

The drag-and-release games feel natural on a touch screen, so Mini Golf, Billiards, Free Throw and Archery Challenge are all good phone picks. Penalty Shootout works well with taps too. Gravity Golf and Home Run Hitter only partly support phones, and the view can feel cramped.

Bowling Alley needs a keyboard and mouse, so play it on a Chromebook or laptop. A trackpad works, but a real mouse makes the flick easier. Free Throw and Home Run Hitter also accept a controller.

Tips From the Practice Range

  1. Use less power than you think. In Mini Golf and Billiards, soft shots leave the ball somewhere useful. Big hits bounce all over the place.
  2. Let the target come to you. The Free Throw hoop keeps moving, so time your release to where it will be. In Archery Challenge, wait for the bow to reach your height instead of chasing it.
  3. Lay off bad pitches. In Home Run Hitter, a pitch outside the zone that you let go by counts as a ball. Save your swing for the ones inside it.
  4. Think about the corners. In Penalty Shootout, high corners are tough to save but go wide most often. A full-strength kick is also harder to stop than a weak one.
  5. Plan two balls ahead. In Billiards, think about where the cue ball will stop, not just which ball drops.

Keep Playing

Like the aim-and-release feel? The arcade games have quick score chasers with the same one-more-try pull. If bending shots around planets in Gravity Golf was your favorite, the puzzle games are full of that kind of thinking.

Sports Games: common questions

Can I play unblocked sports games against a friend?

Penalty Shootout has a local two-player mode, where you swap between taking kicks and diving in goal on one screen. The other sports games here are single-player, built around beating your own best.

Which sports games work on a phone?

Mini Golf, Billiards, Free Throw, Penalty Shootout and Archery Challenge all work well with touch. Gravity Golf and Home Run Hitter only partly suit phones, and Bowling Alley needs a keyboard and mouse.

How do you throw in Bowling Alley?

Slide the mouse to line up the ball, then hold Space. Pull the mouse toward you to charge power and flick it away to throw. The way you flick sets the speed, angle and hook.

Which sports game is the quickest?

Free Throw lasts exactly one minute, and Archery Challenge gives you ten arrows, which takes a minute or two. Both are easy to squeeze in before the bell.
