All 8 adventure games to play now

Adventure games give you a place to explore and a goal at the end of it. Most of the eight here are small, several of them built for game jams with tight size limits, yet a few can hold your attention for days. All of them lean on the keyboard, so this is the category to save for a Chromebook or laptop.

Adventure Games That Tell a Story

A Dark Room begins with cold ashes and a button to light a fire. Click by click, a stranger arrives, a village grows, and eventually you set out into a dangerous world. Everything is plain text, so your imagination fills in the rest. It saves as you go, which matters, because this is the longest game on the page.

The Great Train Robbery is a planning game drawn in text characters. You have $4,000 to hire outlaws and buy gear in a tiny frontier town, then you give everyone orders ahead of time. When the train rolls in, you control no one and simply watch your plan work or fall apart. Press ? whenever you need help. It was made for the Seven Day Roguelike Challenge in 2026.

Turn-Based Adventures for Careful Thinkers

Nothing moves until you do in these two, so you can take as long as you like over each step.

Broughlike Dungeon is a crawl through six small floors on a 9x9 grid. You start with three hearts and one random spell. Every step you take, the monsters take one too, so each move plays like a little chess problem. Grab gems, earn spells and reach the exit.

Warden’s Duty makes you the keeper of a crowded monster prison. Walk into a cell and its prisoner fills the screen, with numbered choices for how to deal with it. Goblins, rats and dragons are all in there. It is really a game about managing what you have, level after level.

Real-Time Adventures With Danger

Bounce Back is a top-down fight with a boomerang. Throw it at slimes and shield carriers, then catch it on the way back. Ten random levels lead to a boss. Move with W A S D, aim with the mouse, and dash with Space or Shift, since you take no damage mid-dash.

Escape from Death Hole drops you through a manhole into black tunnels. A small pool of light follows you while the undead shuffle just outside it. Climb ten floors back to the surface, one key and padlock at a time.

Can’t Get Back is a neon escape where the ground keeps scrolling and anything left behind is gone. Find numbered generators and switch them on in order while dark squares wear down your hearts. Arrows move you and W A S D shoot in four directions, which takes a minute to get used to.

A Platformer With a Switch

OnOff sits between adventure and puzzle. The world has a dark layer and a light layer, and only one is solid at a time. Press Space to swap them, and time it well. There are 25 levels, each with one star to reach, plus an editor for building your own stages.

How Long Each One Takes

  • A set number of levels: Bounce Back has ten, Escape from Death Hole has ten floors and OnOff has 25.
  • Many short runs: Broughlike Dungeon and Can’t Get Back end when you run out of hearts, and a new run starts in seconds.
  • Plan, then replay: The Great Train Robbery is quick to play once, but heists rarely go right the first time, so you will want another try.
  • Days of play: A Dark Room grows slowly. Keep it saved and return to it across a week of lunch breaks.

Devices and Controls

Broughlike Dungeon, Can’t Get Back, The Great Train Robbery and Warden’s Duty use the keyboard only. Bounce Back pairs the keyboard with a mouse for aiming. OnOff also takes a controller.

If your Chromebook runs Can’t Get Back slowly, press L for a low-detail mode. Press M in the same game to mute the music, which helps in a quiet room.

Tips for Explorers

  1. Read every line. In A Dark Room and The Great Train Robbery, the text tells you what matters next.
  2. Think one step ahead. In Broughlike Dungeon, picture where each monster will stand after your move before you make it.
  3. Keep moving while the boomerang is out. In Bounce Back, standing still while you wait for the catch is how you get hit.
  4. Treat each heist as practice. In The Great Train Robbery, note which order went wrong and fix only that on the next run.

If OnOff was your favorite, try the puzzle games. If you want more fighting and less reading, head to the action games.

Adventure Games: common questions

Can I play unblocked adventure games on a phone?

Not really. None of the adventure games here are built for phones, and most need a keyboard. A Chromebook or laptop is the right fit for this category.

Does A Dark Room save my progress?

Yes. It saves to your browser while you play, so the same browser on the same device picks up where you stopped. For a backup, its save option gives you a code to copy and paste in later.

Which adventure games need no fast reflexes?

Broughlike Dungeon and Warden's Duty are turn-based, so nothing moves until you do. A Dark Room and The Great Train Robbery are about planning, not reaction speed.

Which adventure game is the shortest?

Broughlike Dungeon has six small floors, and a run that ends early restarts with one key press. OnOff loads each new level instantly, so you can play a few and stop.
