Escape from Death Hole Unblocked

Climb ten dark floors to the surface, one key and padlock at a time, while the undead close in.

Escape from Death Hole is an isometric adventure in pitch-black tunnels below a city, and you can play Escape from Death Hole unblocked in your browser with just a keyboard. Your hero falls through an open manhole and must work back up to daylight, floor by floor. Only a little pool of light follows you, and the undead shuffle around in the dark just outside it. Santi Herranz made it for the js13k contest in 2022, where every entry had to fit in a tiny file.

How to Play Escape from Death Hole

Each floor follows the same basic recipe:

  1. Search the chamber for the golden key and step on it to grab it.
  2. Carry it to the padlock and bump into the lock.
  3. Wait for a rope to fall onto the exit tile, then step beneath it to climb up on your own.

Floors are numbered from 0, and the top left corner shows LEVEL with your current floor out of 9. Leaving floor 9 brings you up to open air. The top right corner shows a running clock and a diamond counter for the floor you are on, written as found out of total.

Your First Floor

You land in the dark with no weapon, so Space only makes you hop. Walk slowly and let your light reveal the room’s shape before committing to a direction. Anything outside the light is hidden, including walls, so moving in short steps keeps you from running into a dead end or a group of undead.

Try to spot three things on the first pass: the key, the padlock and any sword lying on the floor. Once the rope drops, stand under it and you are hauled up to the next floor, where the clock keeps running.

The Dangers in the Dark

Undead attack in groups, with a banner such as “Wave 2 of 3” announcing each new one a few seconds before it arrives. Deeper floors send more of them. From floor 7 on, some are much tougher undead that take far more hits, and from floor 8 on, faster attackers join in. Each bite chips at your health bar, and pink hearts lying around refill it.

You are not the only person trapped down there. Other survivors wander the halls, and bites can turn them too. When your own bar hits zero, you join the crowd you were running from and need Enter to retry the floor.

Tools You Can Pick Up

  • Swords. Empty-handed, Space is only a jump. Holding a blade turns it into an attack that can finish a foe in one blow. Blades shrink as you use them and break after 20 swings.
  • Borrowed blades. Bump into a survivor who carries a sword and it falls loose so you can grab it.
  • Night-vision goggles. Found from level 3 on, they push your light outward for roughly sixty seconds. A blue bar under your health shows how long they have left.
  • Compass. Also on later floors, it points toward nearby undead, and a compass icon appears at the top while you carry it.
  • Diamonds. They don’t open anything, but every one counts on the final screen.

What the Final Screen Counts

Reaching the surface brings up a YOU ESCAPED screen with your finishing time. Below it are three tallies across the whole climb. Rescued shows how many survivors were still human when you left each floor, out of everyone who started down there. Diamonds shows how many you collected out of all that were hidden. The last line lists how many undead you defeated, and how many humans fell to your blade.

That makes the game replayable even after you finish. You can go back for a faster time, a full diamond count, or a run where more survivors make it out.

Tips for Getting Through Alive

Speed matters because a timer runs through the whole climb, but rushing blind is how you get cornered. A few habits help:

  • Look for a sword before you go hunting for the key.
  • Skip hearts until you have taken damage, since they only help when your bar is low.
  • Watch the blade length and know where the next blade is before yours snaps.
  • Keys and padlocks stay in the same spots each time, so a failed floor still teaches you the route.
  • Fight near survivors when you can. Keeping the undead busy with your sword stops them from turning more people.

A common mistake is grabbing the key and running straight for the lock while a wave is still incoming. The banner gives you a few seconds of warning, so use them to back into a corner with your sword ready instead of getting caught in the open.

What You Need to Play

This one is keyboard only. Arrow keys or WASD move you, Space jumps or swings, and Enter starts the game or retries after you are caught. A mouse click also swings. There are no touch controls, so phones and most tablets are out, but a Chromebook works fine.

The tunnels are dark on purpose, so turning up your screen brightness can help on a dim laptop. A full climb takes roughly a free period, though each floor is short enough to stop between.

Escape from Death Hole questions

How do I finish a floor?

Step onto the golden key, then bump the padlock with it. A rope lowers over the exit, and you climb it by standing underneath.

What if I get bitten?

Bites take chunks out of the red health bar. When it empties, you become one of them, and pressing Enter restarts that floor with a new character.

Where did my sword go?

Blades wear out. A sword shrinks with every use and is gone after its twentieth swing, so keep an eye out for a spare.

How do you win Escape from Death Hole?

Climb out of the last floor to reach the surface. The ending screen shows your total time plus how many survivors, diamonds and undead you accounted for along the way.

Can I play Escape from Death Hole on a Chromebook?

Yes. A Chromebook keyboard has everything you need, since the game uses only the arrow keys or WASD, Space and Enter.

Can I play Escape from Death Hole on a phone?

No. It has no touch controls and needs a keyboard to move, so use a laptop or desktop.
