All 15 puzzle games to play now

Some puzzles want ten seconds of your attention. Others want a whole lunch period. This page sorts the fifteen puzzle games on Totally Science by the kind of thinking they ask for, how long a round lasts and which ones are happy on a phone, so you can pick one fast and spend the break actually playing.

Puzzle Games Sorted by How Much Time You Have

Two to five minutes. Light Flip is a 5x5 grid of amber cells, and each press flips a cell plus its side neighbors. A board takes a few minutes at most, and there is a daily puzzle to come back for. Memory Match is just as quick on its 4x4 board: flip two cards per try and pair up fruits, veggies and snacks. Move up to 6x6 or 8x8 when the small board feels easy.

Ten to twenty minutes. Sudoku has five difficulty levels plus modes like Timed Rush, which puts you on a ten-minute clock, and Hardcore, which ends after three mistakes. Mine Field lets you pick a board size, and a careful game on a big board takes a while.

As long as you like. Mahjong Solitaire asks you to take apart 144 stacked tiles, one free pair at a time, on six boards built to be winnable. 2048 has no clock at all, and after you reach the 2048 tile you can press Keep going and aim for 4096.

Numbers, Words, Colors or Shapes

Puzzles feel very different depending on what you are moving around.

  • Numbers: 2048 merges equal tiles on a 4x4 board. 15 Puzzle gives you fifteen numbered cubes and one empty slot, with a timer and a move counter. Number Trail asks for one line that visits every cell once and passes the numbers in order.
  • Words: Word Search hides twelve words that can run backward or diagonally, with themed lists like Ocean, Music and Animals.
  • Colors: Be Like Water is about pouring liquid between tubes until each holds one color. The bands come in different thicknesses, so you watch free space, not slots. Match 3 swaps neighboring tiles to make lines of three or more.
  • Shapes and space: Tower of Hanoi moves rings between three pegs without ever putting a big ring on a small one. Black Hole Square gives you a 6x6 board, a few tiles and a strict number of taps, and barely explains its rules. Working them out is part of the fun.

Calm Puzzles Versus Puzzles With a Clock

If you want zero pressure, stick with 2048, Light Flip, Tower of Hanoi, Number Trail and Be Like Water. None of them hurry you along.

A few puzzles add speed. Match 3 starts with a two-minute timer bar that keeps draining, and the drain gets faster as your score climbs. Good matches refill part of it. Falling Blocks drops four-square pieces into a well 10 wide and 20 tall, and the pace picks up as you clear lines. Hextris has you spin a hexagon so incoming blocks land in same-color groups. These three are closer to reflex games, so save them for when you want your heart rate up a little.

Mouse, Keyboard or Touch Screen

Most of these puzzle games for school laptops work with whatever you have. Be Like Water, Light Flip, Number Trail, Match 3, Mine Field, Word Search and Black Hole Square are click-or-tap games, which makes them good picks for a tablet. 2048 takes swipes or arrow keys.

Falling Blocks is the exception. It uses the arrow keys and is not set up for touch, so keep it for a Chromebook or laptop. Mahjong Solitaire runs on a phone, but the stacked tiles get small, so a bigger screen helps. Keyboard fans get shortcuts there too: H shows a pair you can take, Z undoes and S reshuffles.

Some games remember where you were. 2048, Hextris and Sudoku keep the game in progress in your browser, so you can close the tab and return on the same device. Clearing your browser data or switching computers wipes that.

Habits That Make Any Puzzle Easier

  1. Treat undo as a tool. Be Like Water, Light Flip, Number Trail and Mahjong Solitaire all let you take moves back. Test an idea, see what happens, then rewind.
  2. Start where there is only one choice. In Sudoku and Mine Field, find the cell that can only be one thing and work outward from there.
  3. Learn the pattern on a small version. Tower of Hanoi with three rings shows the method in a handful of moves. Add rings once it clicks. If you get stuck, it can solve itself while you watch.
  4. Pick a home corner. In 2048, keep your biggest tile in one corner and mostly press the two directions that hold it there.
  5. Plan before the first tap. Black Hole Square gives you a fixed number of moves, so think through the whole board before you touch it.

Where to Go Next

If you like thinking against an opponent instead of a grid, the board and card games have chess, checkers and three kinds of solitaire. When your brain needs a rest, the casual games include a math sprint and a pixel art editor that ask a lot less of you.

Puzzle Games: common questions

What are good unblocked puzzle games to start with?

2048 and Light Flip are the easiest starting points. Each rule set fits in one sentence and a board is short. Once those feel easy, Sudoku teaches real solving methods, with hints that explain their reasoning step by step.

Which puzzle games work on a phone or tablet?

Be Like Water, Light Flip, Number Trail, Word Search, Match 3, Mine Field and Black Hole Square are built for taps, and 2048 takes swipes. Falling Blocks needs arrow keys, so play that one on a laptop.

Are there puzzles with no timer?

Yes. 2048, Light Flip, Tower of Hanoi, Number Trail and Be Like Water never rush you. Match 3, Falling Blocks and Hextris are the speed-based ones, so skip those if you want a slow pace.

Is there a puzzle game that helps with schoolwork?

Word Search lets you type your own words into its word boxes and build a fresh grid from them, so a spelling or vocabulary list can become a puzzle. Sudoku also includes short lessons on solving techniques.
