Road Hopper is a grid-based arcade game where you steer a little frog from the bottom of the screen up to a row of lily pads. In the way are a busy highway and then a river full of floating logs. You can play Road Hopper unblocked with a keyboard, mouse, touchscreen or controller. Each jump moves one square, and a timer keeps you from stalling, so every crossing is a quick puzzle of timing and nerve.
How to Play Road Hopper
Press Play, then hop with the arrow keys or W A S D, one square per press. Holding a key doesn’t keep you moving, so each hop is a choice. You can also click on whichever side of the frog you want to go, or use the on-screen pad on a touchscreen.
You start on the grass at the bottom. First comes the road, where any car, truck or bus that touches you squashes the frog. Halfway up is a strip of grass where nothing can hit you. Then comes the river. Frogs can’t swim here, so you have to ride the logs. Missing a log means a splash, and a log that carries you off the edge of the screen costs that frog too.
Five lily pads sit at the top, swaying gently side to side. Hop onto an empty one and that frog is home safe. A new frog then appears at the start. Fill all five pads and you clear the level.
Points, Lives and the Timer
- 10 points for each new row you reach on a crossing.
- 50 points for every frog that gets home, plus 10 more for each full second left on the timer.
- 200 points for landing on a pad while the bonus fly sits there.
- 1,000 points for filling all five pads and finishing a level.
You start with three spare lives, so four frogs in all, and the game ends when you lose one with none left. The crossing timer gives you 22 seconds on level 1. It drops by 1.5 seconds each level until it reaches its floor of 8 seconds on level 11.
How Each Level Gets Harder
Level 1 is the gentle version: four road lanes, five river lanes, and lanes that switch direction in a neat back-and-forth pattern. After that, several things change:
- Speed: everything moves 16 percent faster for every level past the first.
- More lanes: an extra road lane every two levels, up to seven, and a sixth river lane later on.
- Mixed directions: from level 2, each lane picks its own direction at random.
- Busier roads: one more car per lane every three levels, up to two extra.
The scenery shifts too. The sky cycles through day, dusk, night and dawn, changing every level and repeating every four.
Road Hopper Tips and Strategy
- Use the frozen clock. The timer doesn’t start until you hop, so study the first lanes before you move.
- Read lanes, not cars. Every vehicle in one lane moves at the same speed with even gaps, so the pattern repeats.
- Rest on the middle grass. Nothing can hit you there, but the timer keeps running, so don’t wait too long.
- Walk along logs. Hop sideways on a log to stay away from the edge and line up with the pad you want.
- Pick your pad early. Decide which empty pad you’re aiming for before the last river lane, because a filled pad is as deadly as water.
- Chase the fly only when it’s close. It leaves after a few seconds, and 200 points isn’t worth a lost frog.
- Bank time for points. A quick, clean crossing on level 1 can leave over 10 seconds, which is worth 100 or more points.
The most common mistake is hopping forward without looking at the next lane. Every hop puts you in a new lane with its own timing, so glance one row ahead before each press.
Playing on Any Device
Keyboard, mouse, touch and gamepad all work. On a phone or tablet, touch the screen after you press Play to bring up the direction pad. Escape or the menu icon in the top corner pauses the game, and the pause menu lets you restart or quit.
Sounds play for hops, splashes and the ticking timer, so use headphones in a quiet room. Your best score and highest level stay saved in the browser.
