Snake Game Unblocked

Munch apples, stretch longer and decide whether that golden bonus is worth the risk.

Snake Game is a bright take on the classic grow-as-you-eat arcade idea, starring a cartoon snake with big googly eyes. Play Snake Game unblocked in your browser to chase red apples around a 24 by 18 board, gamble on golden bonus fruit, or take on a computer snake head to head. Rounds last a minute or two, but beating your best score keeps pulling you back.

The Goal in Each Mode

The title screen has two ways to play. PLAY is the endless solo mode: eat as many apples as you can before you crash. VERSUS pits you against a computer snake, and the first one to 10 apples takes the round.

In both modes, your snake dies if its head hits the border or any snake body, including its own. The game freezes for a split second when you crash, then shows your result. A computer snake plays quietly behind the title menu while you choose.

How to Play Snake Game

Press PLAY and your snake spawns at the center, four segments long and already sliding to the right. Steer with the arrow keys or W A S D toward the red apple.

Each apple gives you one point and one extra segment, and a new apple pops up on a random free square. Pressing the direction straight behind you does nothing, so a panicked double tap won’t fold the snake back into itself. Esc pauses the game, and the pause menu also opens the options.

When a run ends, the Game Over card shows your score and your best, or “New Best” if you just set one. PLAY AGAIN starts over right away.

Speed and the Golden Fruit

At the start, the snake moves one square about every 0.12 seconds. Every point you score shaves a little off that, until at 20 points it hits its top speed of one square every 0.06 seconds. After that the pace stays the same, so surviving past 20 is about planning, not reflexes alone.

Golden fruit is the risk-and-reward part of PLAY. After your score reaches 5, every apple you swallow rolls about a 22 percent chance to add a gold one. It’s worth 5 points and adds 2 segments at once. It only lasts 6 seconds. A circle around it closes in as the clock drains, and it blinks just before vanishing, while a small counter in the lower left tracks how long you have.

Inside VERSUS Mode

In VERSUS you start on the left side of the board facing right, and the rival starts seven squares the other side of center, facing you. There are always two apples out, and new ones are placed so they don’t land right next to each other. Both snakes move at one fixed speed, a little faster than PLAY’s opening pace.

The computer heads for the closest apple it can safely reach. When it has no safe path, it picks the move that leaves it the most open room. That makes it tough to beat in a straight race, but you can trap it. If it runs into a wall or your body, you win. If both heads land on one square together, nobody wins. The result card shows a saved tally of how many VERSUS rounds you have taken.

Snake Game Tips

  • Hug the walls while you’re short. Cruising along the edges keeps the open middle free for later, when your tail is long.
  • Look for the exit before the apple. Apples in corners are tempting, but grabbing one can leave you boxed in.
  • Let far-away gold go. Six seconds goes fast, and rushed sharp turns cause most crashes.
  • Follow your own tail. The tail end moves forward every step unless you just ate, so the spot it just left is always open.
  • Block, don’t race, in VERSUS. The longer you grow, the bigger the wall you can wrap around the rival.
  • Cut into its path. Since the computer chases the nearest apple, slipping between it and the target forces a detour.

Mistakes New Players Make

The biggest one is turning too early near your own body and clipping a segment. Turns happen one square at a time, so wait until the head is lined up with the gap. Another is chasing every golden fruit. A 5-point bonus is great, but a crash ends the run for good.

Finally, players often forget the speed ramp. The snake at 15 points feels much faster than at 5, so leave yourself more room as your score climbs.

Controls on a Chromebook, Phone or Gamepad

Keyboard, gamepad and touch all work. On a phone or tablet, tap the screen once and a direction pad shows up near the lower right. Turning the device sideways gives the board more space. The options menu holds a sound volume slider, so you can turn the bite and crash effects down in a quiet room.

Snake Game questions

How do you win Snake Game?

PLAY has no finish line, so the aim is to beat your best score before you crash. In VERSUS you win by eating 10 apples before the computer snake or by making it crash first.

Is the golden fruit worth chasing?

One bite is worth 5 points and adds 2 segments. It only starts appearing once you have 5 points, and each one vanishes after 6 seconds.

Does Snake Game save my progress?

Your best PLAY score and your running count of VERSUS wins are kept in browser storage on that device. Clearing site data or using a private window resets them.

Can I play Snake Game on a Chromebook or phone?

Yes. A Chromebook keyboard works with the arrow keys or W A S D. On a touch screen, tap once and a four-way pad appears near the lower right corner.

Why is my snake getting quicker?

In PLAY, each point shortens the time between steps. The ramp tops out at 20 points, and from then on the snake is twice as fast as its opening pace. VERSUS keeps one steady speed.
