Klondike Solitaire is the patience card game most people learn first: seven columns, a stock pile and four foundations waiting to be filled by suit. This Klondike Solitaire unblocked version deals one card at a time, lets you cycle the stock as often as you like, and moves cards with simple clicks or taps. There is no timer and no points, only a quiet move counter, so it is a calm way to spend a free period.
How the Deal Is Laid Out
A standard 52-card deck is shuffled, and 28 cards go into seven columns, called the tableau. Column one gets one card, column two gets two, and so on up to seven cards in the last column. Only the bottom card of each column starts face up.
The remaining 24 cards form the stock in the top corner. Next to it is the waste, where drawn cards land face up. Four empty foundation spots, one for each suit, sit along the top.
How to Play Klondike Solitaire
The rules are short, and the game enforces every one of them:
- Build down in alternating colors. A card can go on a face-up card exactly one rank higher of the other color. A black 6 fits on a red 7.
- Move runs together. A face-up stretch that already goes down in alternating colors can move as one unit. You can also pick up from the middle of a run and move just its lower part.
- Fill gaps with Kings only. An empty column accepts a King, or a run that starts with one.
- Build foundations up by suit. Each foundation starts with its Ace and climbs to the King, one card at a time.
- Turn hidden cards automatically. When you move the last face-up card off a column, the card beneath flips over on its own.
- Draw from the stock. Each tap moves one card to the waste. The top waste card can go to a column or a foundation.
When the stock runs out, tap the empty spot to rebuild it from the waste. The cards come back in the same order, not reshuffled, and every tap on the stock counts as a move.
Your First Few Moves
Start by scanning the seven face-up cards. Play any Aces to their foundations, then look for column-to-column moves that flip a hidden card. Those come first, because every new face-up card opens more options.
Only after the board is stuck should you start drawing from the stock. Check each new waste card against all seven columns and the foundations before you draw the next. If a move turns out badly, press Undo and try another line; it steps back as far as you want within the session.
Picking up and placing works the same way everywhere: click or tap the card, then click or tap the target. If the target is illegal, the status line says so, and your click on another card simply picks that card up instead.
Klondike Solitaire Strategy Tips
- Dig into the tall columns. The right side of the tableau hides up to six face-down cards. Freeing those matters more than clearing the waste.
- Keep an empty column for a King. A gap accepts nothing else, so make one only when a King, ideally one with a run under it, is ready to move.
- Hold back low cards when they are useful. A red 3 sitting in a column can be the only landing spot for a black 2. Since foundation cards can never come back down, sending it up early can trap you.
- Learn the stock order. With draw-one and same-order recycling, the stock repeats exactly. Note where a needed card sits and plan around it.
- Pick which King to move. When two Kings could fill one gap, choose the one whose color lets you place the Queen you have waiting.
- Use Undo as a scout. Flip a hidden card, see what it is, and back out if it opens nothing.
Mistakes New Players Make
The biggest one is drawing through the stock before checking the tableau. Every draw adds a move, and the best plays are usually already on the board.
Another is emptying a column with no King to fill it. That spot then sits useless, while the cards you moved still need homes.
Finally, some players move a run just because they can. If the shift does not flip a card, free a needed card, or create a useful gap, it often just shuffles the problem around.
Playing on a Chromebook, Phone or Tablet
The game works with mouse, touch and keyboard, and the layout reflows for portrait or landscape screens. On narrow phones, the New game and Undo buttons may sit inside the Menu. Red suits appear as outlined shapes and black suits as solid ones, which keeps the cards clear on any display.
The Settings menu lets you enlarge the text, switch on high contrast and choose compact, normal or spacious spacing. A short rules card opens by itself the first time you play on a device. There is no sound, and your game is saved in the browser, so you can close the tab and continue later on the same computer.
Similar Card Games to Try
Klondike suits both a short break and a longer session, since you can pause anywhere. Not every deal can be won, so a fresh shuffle is always one button away. When you want a change, the board and card games section has more:
- FreeCell Solitaire deals every card face up and gives you four free cells, so it rewards planning over luck.
- Spider Solitaire uses two decks and builds same-suit runs from King to Ace.
- Mahjong Solitaire swaps cards for tiles that you match in pairs.
